Molecular Neuroscience And Synapses & Circuits (NESC 9020)
Course Syllabus

Time: March 27-May 2 (almost star wars day)

  • Mondays, 1-3PM

  • Wednesday s, 11AM-1PM

  • Thursdays, 2-4PM

Location: Pinn Hall Room 5023

Course Description:
In part one, this graduate-level course explores the fundamental concepts of signal transduction and biochemistry in neurons, with a focus on developmental neuroscience, neurotrophin biology, and the biochemical processes that support neuronal function. In part two, the course will borrow from both classical and current literature to highlight key mechanisms that underlie the electrical excitability of the neurons, and how such excitability enables neural circuits to drive behavior.

Students will engage with cutting-edge research papers and reviews, and utilize artificial intelligence (AI) tools to enhance their learning experience. The emphasis will be on formulating thoughtful and relevant questions rather than solely focusing on answers.

Course Objectives:

  1. Understand the key principles of signal transduction and biochemistry in neurons

  2. Explore the role of neurotrophins in neural development and function

  3. Investigate the biochemical processes that support neuronal metabolism and neurotransmission

  4. Critically analyze research papers and reviews in the field

  5. Develop skills in utilizing AI to ask meaningful questions and explore concepts

  6. Engage in discussions and presentations to share insights and ideas

Course Structure:
The course consists of 17 classes, each lasting 2 hours. Students are expected to read the assigned paper(s) and/or review(s) before each class and come prepared with questions and discussion points.
